Our Sustainable Practices

What exactly is "slow fashion"?
Great question! Slow fashion is the opposite of fast fashion. It's a movement that values quality, ethical production, and environmental integrity over speed and cheapness.
At by Jen Byrne, we are committed to upcycled & sustainable slow fashion. This means we masterfully breathe new life into forgotten, vintage textiles - like heirloom tablecloths, curtains, industry textile waste and pre-loved garments - to create modern, wearable treasures.
Every piece is a unique, one-of-a-kind item, reducing waste and giving beautiful fabrics a second life. It’s fashion with a conscience, designed to be cherished for years to come.
How do you source your beautiful vintage textiles?
Ah, the textile treasure hunt! This is one of our favourite parts of the process. We are passionate about giving new life to upcycled fabric and reducing textile waste. Our materials are carefully sourced from:
- Antique Markets & Charity Shops: Jen is constantly on the lookout for high-quality vintage textiles like embroidered tablecloths, curtains, and linens.
- Private Donations: We accept donations of beautiful, pre-loved fabrics (see our next FAQ for more)!
- Industry Waste: We sometimes utilise high-quality textile offcuts from a local textile merchant.
Every piece of upcycled fabric has a history, and we love weaving that heirloom fabric story into your new garment. It ensures your piece is truly one-of-a-kind!
I have some beautiful old fabric/textiles. Do you accept donations?
Yes, absolutely! We are always on the hunt for beautiful, high-quality vintage fabrics and textiles to inspire our next collection or be utilised by creative hands in one of our classes.
Your once loved treasures could become someone's new favourite dress! We especially love:
- Embroidered tablecloths
- Vintage curtains
- High-quality linen, cotton, silk or wool remnants
If you have something you want to go to a good home, please Contact Us Here with a few photos and details. We'd love to hear the story behind the fabric!
How do you ensure your production process is sustainable and ethical?
Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond just the materials. Our entire process is deeply rooted in ethical and sustainable practices:
- Zero-Waste Focus: We utilize fabric scraps for smaller accessories or stuffing, aiming for minimal waste in our Edinburgh studio.
- Local & Handmade: Every item is lovingly made in our Edinburgh studio by Jen and/or our wonderful sewing machinist Olive! This ensures fair working conditions, a low carbon footprint compared to mass-produced garments and full oversight on quality and attention to the smallest details.
- Durability: By using high-quality, hand selected vintage materials we create garments that are built to last, encouraging a circular fashion mindset and ensuring each piece will be cherished for years to come.

How should I keep my garment looking it's best?
Since your by Jen Byrne piece is made from precious vintage textiles, it deserves a little extra love! We generally recommend:
- Most pieces are machine washable on a 30 degree cycle, or you can hand wash them for extra care.
- Use a mild, eco-friendly detergent.
- Air Dry: Lay flat or hang to dry - never tumble dry.
Specific care instructions are included with every garment, so please always check the tag!
Treating your piece with care ensures it remains a treasured part of your sustainable wardrobe for a lifetime.
Why does slow fashion cost more than fast fashion?
That’s a brilliant question, and it gets right to the heart of what we do! The simple answer is that slow fashion reflects the true cost of making beautiful, ethical clothing. When you invest in a by Jen Byrne piece, you’re not just buying a garment; you’re investing in:
- Fair Wages: We ensure everyone involved in the creation process is paid fairly, above the living wage.
- Quality & Durability: Our pieces are designed to last, not end up in a landfill. We use high-quality, vintage textiles and luxury textile offcuts that require careful preparation and skilled craftsmanship.
- Time & Skill: Each item is handmade in Edinburgh by Jen and her team, a process that takes time, care, and award-winning skill.
Think of it as a sustainable investment in a timeless, unique piece that tells a story, rather than a fleeting trend. It’s better for your wardrobe, better for the planet, and better for the people who make your clothes!
I live outside the UK. Do you ship internationally?
Yes, we love sending our sustainable fashion treasures all over the world! We offer international shipping to most countries.
Additionally, because of our strong connection to Ireland, we regularly ship from Dublin throughout the year for Irish & EU customers. See the website header for more info or contact us to learn more.
Shipping costs and delivery times will be calculated at checkout based on your location. Please note that customers are responsible for any customs duties or import taxes charged by their country. We promise it’s worth the wait for a piece of joyful fashion handmade in Edinburgh!
What is your policy on returns and exchanges for one-of-a-kind pieces?
Because our pieces are one-of-a-kind and often made from delicate vintage textiles, we encourage you to check the detailed measurements on the product page before purchasing.
- Ready-to-Wear: We offer returns for a full refund or exchange within 14 days of delivery, provided the item is unworn and in its original condition.
- Bespoke/Custom Orders: Due to the personalized nature of bespoke commissions, these items are non-refundable. However, we work closely with you throughout the design process to ensure you are thrilled with the final fit and style!
